Nutations in growing plant shoots as a morphoelastic flutter instability

چکیده
Growing plant shoots exhibit spontaneous oscillations that Darwin observed, and termed ‘circumnutations’. Recently, they have received renewed attention for the design optimal actuation of bioinspired robotic devices. We discuss a possible interpretation these as Hopf-type bifurcation in growing morphoelastic rod. Using three-dimensional model numerical simulations, we analyse salient features this flutter-like phenomenon (e.g. characteristic period oscillations) their dependence on details (in particular, impact choosing different growth models) finding that, overall, are robust with respect to changes adopted. This article is part theme issue ‘Topics mathematical complex materials’.

Use of Palm Waste Cellulose as a Substitute for Common Growing Media in Aglaonema Growing
In order to evaluate the possibility use of palm waste cellulose as a substitute substrate for growing pot plants, an experiment was conducted in completely randomized block design with 6 replication and six treatments on Aglaonema sp. The treatments were 5 levels including 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 palm celluloid wastes mixed with different rates of some amendments such as peat, coconut coir, perl...
متن کاملPlant shoots exhibit synchronized oscillatory motions
In animals, the ability to move has evolved as an important means of protection from predators and for enhancing nutrient uptake. In the animal kingdom, an individual's movements may become coordinated with those of other individuals that belong to the same group, which leads, for example, to the beautiful collective patterns that are observed in flocks of birds and schools of fish or in animal...

متن کاملStreaming instability in growing cell populations.
Flows of cells growing as a quasimonolayer in a confined space can exhibit streaming, with narrow streams of fast-moving cells flowing around clusters of slowly moving cells. We observed and analyzed this phenomenon experimentally for E. coli bacteria proliferating in a microfluidic cell trap using time-lapse microscopy. We also performed continuum modeling and discrete-element simulations to e...
متن کاملElastic instability in growing yeast colonies.
The differential adhesion between cells is believed to be the major driving force behind the formation of tissues. The idea is that an aggregate of cells minimizes the overall adhesive energy between cell surfaces. We demonstrate in a model experimental system that there exist conditions where a slowly growing tissue does not minimize this adhesive energy. A mathematical model demonstrates that...
